Dolphka Lewis has been a fixture in the shotgun formation for the East Eagles since his freshman season.

Four years later, the senior quarterback has developed into one of the most experienced and dynamic players in the state–and he is making the most of his final season in an Eagles uniform.

Pueblo East is off to a 3-1 start this season, with its only loss coming against Palmer Ridge, the No. 1-ranked team in Colorado’s Class 3a classification. Since that opening-night setback, the Eagles have responded with three consecutive wins, gaining confidence and momentum as the season moves forward.

Lewis has been a major part of that success.

Through the first four games, Lewis leads Pueblo East with 365 rushing yards and four rushing touchdowns, averaging 5.7 yards per carry. He has also added 211 passing yards and one passing touchdown through the air.

With the ability to hurt defenses both running and throwing the football, Lewis has quickly become one of the biggest priorities on every opposing scouting report.

And that is nothing new for the senior quarterback.

Lewis is adding to an already impressive career, coming off a junior year campaign that earned him 2nd Team All-State honors in which he accounted for more than 2,400 total yards and 31 total touchdowns, establishing himself as one of the top playmakers in the classification.

Four Years of Growth

Taking over as a starting quarterback as a freshman can be a difficult challenge. Lewis has now spent four seasons learning the position, facing different defenses and growing into a leadership role within the Eagles program.

While his physical ability has always been an important part of his game, Lewis believes the biggest improvements have come in the mental side of football.

“Over my career, the biggest improvements in my game have been my leadership, decision-making, and confidence,” Lewis said.

Those improvements have helped him become a more complete quarterback.

“I’ve learned how to read defenses better, make smarter decisions with the ball, and stay calm under pressure,” he said.

That experience has also changed the way Lewis approaches his role with his teammates.

“I’ve also grown as a leader and learned how to bring my teammates together and hold myself accountable,” he said.

For a quarterback who has been under center since he was a freshman, that evolution is an important part of what makes Lewis such a valuable player for Pueblo East.

He isn’t simply expected to make plays. He is expected to lead.

Humble and Hungry

Much of Lewis’ competitive mentality was developed long before he took his first snap for Pueblo East.

His older brothers have been among his biggest influences throughout his football career.

“I have always looked up to my older brothers because they pushed me to be better than them and trained day in and day out with them,” Lewis said.

Those experiences helped shape Lewis both as an athlete and as a person.

“They motivated me to be the person I am today, humble and hungry and to leave a family legacy behind,” he said.

That mindset continues to drive him during his senior season.

While his junior season already established him as an All-State player, Lewis isn’t satisfied with what he has accomplished. His focus remains on improving, building chemistry with his teammates and helping Pueblo East accomplish something bigger.

The Final Chapter

With Pueblo East sitting at 3-1 and riding a three-game winning streak, Lewis and the Eagles have positioned themselves for an exciting stretch of football.

For the senior quarterback, every game carries a little more significance.

The Eagles have won three straight, and Lewis is once again proving to be one of their most important offensive weapons.

The senior quarterback knows exactly what is expected of him.

Make plays.

Lead his teammates.

Enjoy every last snap.
