Xavier Freeman Emerging as One of the Nation’s Elite Throwers at CSU-Pueblo

For Xavier Freeman, success has never been accidental.

The former Pueblo East High School graduate has spent his entire life submerged in competition. Growing up in a household with three athletic brothers will do just that to you. Although family “fun” was always competitive, Freeman developed a relentless drive that has helped him become one of the premier throwers in NCAA Division II Track and Field.

The work ethic instilled in him at a young age paid major dividends during the 2025 season at Colorado State University Pueblo. During the indoor season, Freeman earned RMAC Runner-up honors in the shot put while placing fifth in the weight throw. This effort earned him an opportunity to compete at the NCAA Division II Indoor National Championships, where he earned First Team All-American honors with a seventh-place finish in the shot put.

Freeman’s success during the indoor season carried momentum into the outdoor season. Freeman ascended to the top of the RMAC rankings, capturing the championship in shot put, finishing second in the discus, and was named RMAC Field Athlete of the Meet. Freeman went on to take 2nd at the outdoor nationals. 

Built Through Family Competition

Athletic success runs deep within the Freeman family. 

Xavier and his three brothers all enjoyed standout careers, while their father led the way establishing himself as a multiple-time All-American wrestler at the University of Southern Colorado, now CSU Pueblo. 

Freeman credits his older brother Zion as one of his earliest influences. Watching Zion excel in wrestling, football, and track gave Xavier goals to reach for—and eventually surpass. After watching his older brother win a state wrestling title, Xavier ultimately won a wrestling title of his own and added another one before directing his attention to track and field at the collegiate level. 

Despite a continuous sibling rivalry in the household, Freeman understands it's not only what makes them superb athletes, but builds their connection even stronger. 

One Final Goal

With a heavy weight of accolades already under his belt, Freeman still believes his best season is ahead of him. 

With one year of eligibility remaining, Freeman has his eyes set on winning a national championship. Finishing second last year by just 16 centimeters, plenty of fuel has been added to the fire. 

Along the way, Freeman hopes to break CSU Pueblo’s school records in both the shot put and discus while helping mentor the next generation of ThunderWolves throwers. 

For the Pueblo East Graduate who grew up on competing against his brothers, the pursuit of excellence remains as strong as ever.
