South Colts Capture Runyon Summer League Championship in Comeback Fashion

Pueblo South erases an early three-run deficit with a five-run sixth inning to defeat Pueblo West, 6-3.

Pueblo South needed just one inning to turn a championship game–and an early three-run deficit–completey around.

The Colts, led by Head Coach Kevin Ortiz, rallied for five runs in the top of the sixth inning to come from behind and defeat Pueblo West 6-3 on Thursday, July 23rd, capturing the Runyon Sports Complex High School Summer League Championship.

Pueblo West controlled the game early, striking first with a run in the bottom of the first inning before adding two more runs in the second to build a 3-0 advantage. Landon Carnes delivered a two-run single as Pueblo West jumped in front.

The Colts finally broke through in the fifth inning, pushing across their first run to trim the Pueblo West lead to 3-1. One inning later, the game flipped in dramatic fashion.

South’s offense came alive in the top of the sixth, scoring five runs on three hits to turn a two-run deficit into a 6-3 advantage. The five-run outburst provided the Colts with their first lead of the night and completely shifted momentum of the game.

South’s James Silva made sure the comeback stood.

Silva entered in relief in the third inning and proceeded to close the door. He tossed five scoreless innings, allowing just two hits while striking out five to earn the victory.

South finished with eight hits, led by Israel Allen and Roger Krummel with two apiece. Pilot Aguilar drove in two runs, while Javid Orozco and Marcus Hutchings each added an RBI.

The championship capped seven weeks of high school summer baseball at Runyon Sports Complex, where high school programs from Pueblo and the surrounding area had the opportunity to compete and develop players.
