Week 3 Football Previews

Pueblo Central @ Pueblo Centennial (Friday 7 PM, Dutch Clark Stadium)

It is Bell Week!  The oldest ongoing high school rivalry west of the Mississippi River brings in 1-1 Central against 0-2 Centennial.  The cats are coming off of a dramatic win, coming from behind to defeat Discovery Canyon on the road 22-21.  The dogs are looking to bounce back from a 53-0 loss to Florence.

Central is looking to make it 8 wins a row in this rivalry, with the last 5 wins being by 30+ points.

For Centennial to compete in this one, they will need to contain freshman Sonny Vigil, who is quickly adjusting to the speed of Varsity football.

Despite recent struggles, all will be forgiven on the Northside if Centennial is able to pry away the bell from their crosstown rivals.

Make sure to purchase your tickets in advance if you want to reserve a seat for this one.  The game will also be available to watch on PCC’s Facebook page, Xfinity Channel 19, and on the radio with KDZA.

Pueblo South @ Pueblo County (Friday 7 PM, County High School)

While the Bell Game deservedly gets the attention this week,  The battle between South (2-1, 1-0) and County (2-0) is heavy-weight league game that should not be overlooked.

Emerging playmakers on each side set up a huge matchup this Friday night on the Mesa.

Sophomore WR/DB Brandon Norris introduced himself in a big way last week in the Colt’s

league opener.  Norris recorded 11 catches for 259 yards and 3 scores against the Liberty Lancers.  He showed off his downfield ability, while also turning underneath routes into big gains after making multiple defenders miss.

The Hornets respond with their own new playmaker, as RB Santana Baca is coming off a workhorse type performance in his own right.  The senior led the Hornets last week with 145 rushing yards against a good Thompson Valley team.  Baca has been thrust into a larger role on offense due to some injuries, but he was up to the challenge last weekend.

While there still is a lot of football to be played, the winner of this puts themselves in a good spot for the rest of league play.

If you are not at Dutch Clark in red or blue, this game will take place at County High School at 7 pm.

Pueblo East @ Canon City (Friday 7 PM, Canon City High School)

The 2-1 Eagles will end their road trip with a visit to 2-1 Canon City.  This early league matchup is going under the radar with other matchups around town, but is an important one.

East seemed to have found its footing last week, traveling to Lewis-Palmer and winning 44-6.

Senior RB Logan Trujillo stole the show in this one, rushing for 218 yards and 4 scores on just 14 carries.  He also led the team with 9 tackles on defense.

Former Pueblo West and Pueblo County head coach Monte Pinkerton will prepare the Tigers to match the high flying Eagles.

Pueblo West vs Vista Ridge (Friday 7 PM, Pueblo West High School)

Pueblo West is coming off a tough 28-27 road loss last week to Roosevelt.

There is only one way to get over a tough loss, and that is to bounce back the next week.  The 2-1 Wolves of Vista Ridge come into Cyclone Alley, and they might be catching West at a bad time.

Look for Jr. Quarterback Chase Harrison to have his team ready to respond, and come out on fire against Vista Ridge.
